I became aware of this book through friends, colleagues and social media. I was naive in the sense that I had assumed as a history teacher, someone who has read many books about World War Two, I was prepared for the visit and it wouldn’t be as hard-hitting and shocking for me as it would be for other people.

Due to what factors do you think Lale managed to survive? Lale and Gita’s love came under such unique and not-ideal circumstances.

I liked the Tattooist of Auschwitz more than I thought I would.. Lale’s story is unique in that he’s not really a normal prisoner at Auschwitz.

I was surprised to read this based on the knowledge that a leading SS officer could be punished for engaging in a type of long-term, intimate relationship with a female Jewish prisoner during this period but I did think perhaps that did occur and a blind eye was turned. When a novel has become so well-known in such a short period of time there can also be a sense of pressure and high expectation with the book. Lale ran into Gita, a woman he has met before, prior to being imprisoned, and their love grew from there. I saw the original belongings of people that were prisoners at the camp. Harry fled to England as a child in 1939 with his sister as part of the Kindertransport organised rescue effort prior to the outbreak of war. Reading this book made me think and reflect on my visit.

I sobbed. The fact that Lale knew multiple languages helped him obtain many jobs during his time as an inmate, and after. As you are lead to believe the Nazis attitude and mentality had no regards for human life or the emotions of their prisoners, I was quite surprised Gita was not hurt, maimed, raped, killed or just moved from the camp, to torment him and keep him in line.

It was a brutal yet necessary reality check. I also went to Poland on my own, this wasn’t the first time I had traveled alone as most of my early twenties were spent traveling around Europe as my friends and family don’t have the same amount of holidays as I do as a teacher. When a novel has become so well-known in such a short period of time there can also be a sense of pressure and high expectation with the book.
