This book contains 26-pages that Prince wrote intended for his memoir. Sprinkled in with these memories are recollections of high school and girlfriends from an otherwise ordinary teenage life, along with notes and sketches of imaginary album covers and press kits — which are like so many other teen fantasy sketches, except, well, they’re by Prince and they came true. And the scant memoir pages are touching and offbeat and make him seem less gone from us, less out of reach. I got to know him through his film, ‘Purple Rain’, and, then, of course, all of his music. Although the actual autobiography segment of this book ends at the end of Prince’s teens, it shines an intimate and revealing light on the least-known period of his life — his childhood — which is embellished with family photos, notes and other ephemera. I can't imagine Prince giving his okay on those pages. This is less a memoir by Prince, more an article written by Dan Piepenbring. Not enough material nor substance. I think people might be surprised by that because what many fans think is that his family life was similar to the one depicted in the movie "Purple Rain". what's good is one of prince's scrapbooks from when he was 19 & of course loads of other pictures of prince who would honestly look hot in a burlap sack rapidly rolling down the side of a mountain. Slate has relationships with various online retailers. it's a big marketing scam but a great way to hide that is of course to show somebody so many pictures of prince they're foaming at the mouth & smashin that Life Alert button w/ abandon. But first, what is in the section that Prince did write? And Dan Piepenbring's introduction is a delight. It wasn't finished. She reached over, snapped the radio off and said, "That Prince is just nasty." Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo, this book has THEEEE longest introduction EVER, in the whole world... how selfish Dan, this story isn’t about you! The rest of the book features handwritten song lyrics from some of his early songs in the 70s and 80s and quotes from magazine interviews he did and lots of photos; many of them never-before-seen from the 70s and early 80s. His work. The Beautiful Ones is the story of how Prince became Prince-a first-person account of a kid absorbing the world around him and then creating a persona, an artistic vision, and a life, before the hits and fame that would come to define him. Prince's mandate(s) for the book was that it "be a handbook for the brilliant community," "a radical call for collective ownership, for black creativity," a book about freedom. It should have been a feature story in Rolling Stone or any number of literary journals. #2) Dan Piepenbring - the introductory essay was fantastic. The book is told in four parts. This is NOT a memoir. He also wrote of a childhood obsession with “Superman,” noting “It’s funny to turn on the TV and in America you just see white people playing the heroes… That affects your self-image when you’re black and watching white heroes.” He also writes about his childhood nickname (“Skipper”), his first kiss, and the seizures he suffered until adolescence. Not only was it not finished, but the writing had barely begun when Prince passed away. In the extremely long 47 page intro, Dan recounts Prince’s wishes for the book. I was excited about this book. We learn about his epileptic seizures, his first kiss, his relationship with his parents, their relationship with each other, his adolescent years, and how Prince saw himself and his place in the world. You could feel how personal Prince can be for people. At the same time, his musical talent was flowering, and he writes of his early influences (James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles and many others) and the guidance of a local DJ named Jerry “Motormouth” Mac. And, of course, my parents confirmed. It's time we all reach out for something new. As a fan, it was amazing to see Prince's handwritten notes, lyrics, and memories. Part 2 is a bunch of notes Prince wrote in very hard to read handwriting. He was everything you'd expect someone like Prince to be as a boy and young man: the smartest person in the room. One of those decisions included finishing this memoir. What we have here is a package created with struggles, but with love. I can't imagine Prince giving his okay on those pages. I am highly disappointed with this book. While the photos, quotes and ephemera do a mostly satisfying job of concluding the book, the closing chapters are inevitably a bringdown after the revelations in the autobiographical section. This book is not a memoir written by Prince! A place where I could pretend dress-up & enter a fantasy of my own direction. Prince tragically passed away at his Paisley Park home on April 21, 2016. What I, for one, would give for it to possibly have been completed. You could feel how personal Prince can be for people. Buy this book and learn more about one of the True All Time Greats. As a whole, the supplementary material might be more satisfying if Piepenbring’s thoughtful explanations of each artifact’s origins (who’s in the photos, etc.) But in so few pages, he brings his charm, wit and astuteness. But Dan Piepenbring could have done more justice to the material he did have. Please try again. Dan Piepenbring's introduction (half the book, really) is illuminating, but again, probably only worthy of a podcast, article or interview and not a book sold as "by Prince."
